Still South Ossetia and Abkhazia

Just as it was nuts for Putin to have fueled the revolt of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, so it is equally crazy for world leaders from the west to pretend that these two regions can be kept under Georgian's control against the will of their people. I understand that they make a large part of the small country that Georgia is today (it was much larger in the past) and that the loss of these two regions would have an enormous impact, terrible even, on Georgian pride and self notion. But, what the heck, there simply is no other way. A country's got to do what a country's got to do.

Allies must put fairness before their alliances.

The fact that the western countries are standing behind this imposition of Georgian sovereignty on these two regions will rightly infuriate the Russians, who will see this as one more proof that the west is against them. This will only accentuate the deep division and distrust that these last years (since the invasion of Afghanistan) have brought us.

The double standards on Yugoslavia and Georgia (just like in the case of an isolated nuclear Israel) will provide fuel for conflict for generations to come. Well, the show must go on I suppose.
